Los Angeles - Comedian Russell Brand was arrested and charged with battery after an incident involving a photographer at Los Angeles International Airport.
Brand, 35, was taken into custody but later released after posting $20,000 (£12,800) bail.
The Guardian reported that an airport police spokeswoman said the victim, a paparazzo, placed Brand under citizen's arrest.
The altercation took place as Brand and his fiancée, Katy Perry, were entering the airline terminal that houses Delta airlines. It was reported that he were planning to fly to New York together when the incident occurred.
Brand was fired from his job as an MTV presenter on 12 September 2001, after he showed up for work dressed as Osama bin Laden.
In 2008 he resigned from the BBC following an incident where he and TV presenter Jonathan Ross left offensive messages on the answering machine of actor Andrew Sachs about his granddaughter.
His most recent film appearance was in Get Him to the Greek. He will soon be seen playing Trinculo in a version of The Tempest, and as the main character in a remake of Arthur, which originally starred Dudley Moore.
