article imagePrince Philip asks politician if she's wearing tartan knickers

By Lynn Curwin     Sep 17, 2010 in World
Edinburgh - When the Duke of Edinburgh saw that many of the male politicians attending a papal reception were wearing tartan ties, he asked the female Scottish Consevative leader if she had tartan knickers.
The Guardian reported that the prince was said to have turned to Annabel Goldie and asked if she had a "pair of knickers made out of this?"
"I couldn't possibly comment – and even if I did, I couldn't possibly exhibit them," she was quoted as replying.
While some people feel that what he said was inappropriate, it appears that Goldie found it very humourous.
According to a Tory insider, she was laughing over the exchange later and said it was marvellous to know that humour is alive and well in the royal family.
It was not Prince Philip’s first question to someone about their knickers. According to The Guardian, he said "You're not wearing mink knickers, are you?" to a fashion writer at a World Wildlife Fund event in 1993.
