Owner of dead cow asks for leniency for teens who killed his cow

By Cynthia Trowbridge     Sep 16, 2010 in Crime
Traverse City - Two teen young men were charged with attempted killing or torturing an animal and sentenced to two years probation and 180 days in jail.
Traverse City, Michigan----Jared Kaltenbach, 18, and Kody Richardson, 17, each pleaded guilty last month to a single misdemeanor count of attempted killing or torturing an animal. 86th District Judge Michael Haley sentenced them to two years probation and 180 days in jail. Haley said they would be eligible for a program called community corrections. The program would allow them to serve their sentences in a transition house or other residence instead of in jail.
In court the owner of the dead cow told Judge Haley he didn't want the teens to serve anymore time in jail.
Kaltenbach has been in jail since August 10 and Richardson since August 8.
Traverse City Record-Eagle.com reports the cow's owner Bob Boeve said, "In my opinion, I feel like they've probably served enough time. I'd be more interested in seeing them getting their lives on the right track."
The cow was shot with a compound bow as Richardson shined a flashlight on it and Kaltenbach shot it. Even though Richardson told police they shot it in self-defense as it came at them as they walked through a field, they had to climb an electric fence to get on the property owned by Boeve.
Freep.com reports Judge Haley said,“This kind of thing could lead to some even more drastic acts that might not just involve animals, but human beings."
Because Kaltenbach’s comments in court weren’t audible his attorney Paul Jarboe said,“He is ... remorseful for what has occurred."
Richardson did apologize for the part he took shooting cow. He said,“I realize now that what I committed was pretty stupid ... I just hope that (Boeve) accepts my apology."
Kaltenbach and Richardson must also pay $1,500 in restitution for the dead animal, plus the $5,000 in reward offered by Boeve for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the case. Because there were many tips reported to the police Boeve is still working out who will get the money.
