article image2005 Heisman Trophy will be vacated

The Heisman Trophy Trust made an announcement Wednesday, on the heels of former USC star Reggie Bush's announcement that he would return his 2005 Heisman Trophy, that the award for that year would remain vacant.
For the first time in the history of one of college's most prestigious awards, the Heisman Trophy has seen two firsts, now with the decision that the 2005 slot will remain vacant. Reggie Bush became the first winner to return his trophy on Tuesday and then on Wednesday the Heisman Trophy Trust announced that the 2005 Heisman would remain vacant.
The decision of the trust also puts to rest the question of what was going to happen now that Bush had turned his trophy in. Lobbying had already occurred for Vince Young, the runner up, to be awarded the trophy. Young had initially said he doesn't want it but as late as Monday said he would accept it. Young's former coach Mack Brown pushed hard speaking publicly that the runner up should receive the award, hence Young.
The Heisman Trophy Trust is made up of eight men and women who not only award the Heisman Trophy to the nation's top football player, but they also award a humanitarian award. The man job of the trust is to ensure the continuation and integrity of the award.
The Heisman Trophy Trust released a statement reading, "It was a difficult decision to return the Heisman Trophy and he exhibited great character in acknowledging his mistakes and accepting the consequences. As a result of Reggie Bush's decision to forfeit his title as Heisman winner of 2005, the Trustees have determined that there will be no Heisman Trophy winner for the year 2005."
USC also made another move this week and removed Bush's jersey from the Coliseum where it hung next to former teammate Matt Leinart's. The removal of Bush's No. 5 is just one more sign of the university tyring to cut all ties with their former back. Other jerseys former USC stars still hang including O.J. Simpson, Marcus Allen, and Charles White just to name a few.
