Hollyoaks star, Kieron Richardson, came out on British television yesterday, during a live interview on ITV's This Morning.
The actor was being interviewed about the ongoing storyline surrounding Ste Hays, the part he plays in the Channel 4 soap opera.
During the discussion, it was announced that his Hollyoaks character would be coming out as gay, which prompted the 24-year-old to mention that he himself was gay.
Richardson joined Hollyoaks in 2006, following a short stint on the late-night spin-off drama, Hollyoaks: In the City.
He told viewers that his friends and family already knew but he had decided to talk publicly about it now ahead of the soap's a gay storyline.
Pink News have published a part-transcript of the interview:
When I was on Dancing on Ice, newspapers speculated and tried to say we kind of know and if you want to say you can do your story with us and get it out there.
At that point, my personal life took a back step and it was more about the competition and trying to get through the next week rather than get a few column inches in the newspaper and maybe raise my profile at the time. But it wasn't about that.
But now I feel that it's relevant and the storyline's relevant to some situations in my life then if maybe I can help people that are going through the same thing then it's a bonus.
Fans of the show have responded favourably to Richardson's coming out. Responding to the Pink News article, Mihangel ap Yrs said: "Oh for the time when saying 'I'm gay' gets the response 'Whatever'. Anyway, a nice boy who has come out when he wanted to and with out tabloid blackmail. Hope he has a good life."
