The defence giant British Aerospace (BAE) Systems is to make job losses numbering more than 900 mainly in military division in the United Kingdom. 298 jobs will go at their Warton, Lancashire England site alone According to the Unite Union
Only 24 hours earlier BAE had been asked to examine options to reduce the number of vessels it delivers. Chief executive Ian King, told a House of Commons Defence Committee “Those options range from reducing to one carrier or none”
The UK government is currently committed to commissioning two aircraft carriers HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales.
Unions have reacted in shock as officials have since
warned that the job losses in BAE’s Military Air Solutions and Insyte divisions could be the “tip of the iceberg”
General Secretary of Unite union Hugh Scullion has already vowed to fight any compulsory redundancies. A total of five sites across the United Kingdom will be affected and include Brough and Farnborough as sites earmarked for job losses.
A full breakdown of which branches and how many losses is to be announced shortly.
