A new social network announced on Labor Day that they plan on burying their competition "within days" and that they believe their bare-bones website should make Facebook "nervous."
In a press release yesterday, the launch of meetyourfriends.com was announced; a new social network that boasts you can ‘Meet the World, Discover New Friends.’
Developed by Neil Bryant, one of the founders of Badoo.com, MeetYourFriends is marketing itself as simple and geared towards ‘the growing market of 30- and 40-somethings who just want to talk to each other.’
Bryant believes they’ve found a market for those who are “keen to engage each other in casual chat,” and are building their site around that market. “We wanted to bring some fresh new ideas into the social networking sphere, and with a unique combination of email and live chat we think we may have just achieved that,” he says.
Social networks, such as Facebook, have seen a lot of success with their virtual gaming; such as owning and building a virtual farm, aquarium or zoo. MeetYourFriends won’t cater to those users; they have gone ‘retro’ and basic, being a social network for those who just wish to chat with friends from around the world.
According to their website, meetyourfriends.com, they are “a dynamic online social community where you are free to meet, chat, flirt and socialize with a diverse network of people from across the world.” Pointing out that “it’s human nature that everyone has an innate desire to connect with one another,” they say, “MeetYourFriends is like having a virtual coffee-shop, bar, your living room and a nightclub all in one place with the same associated giveaways and overheads.”
There are two kinds of membership profiles. Everyone can have a social membership profile, which is free. However, there is a premium membership profile that, because they “require extra resources to maintain and administrate,” they require the use of ‘credits,’ which can be purchased through their site (for example, 20 credits cost $16). A premium profile is for those who are more serious about building a ‘long term relationship.’
Bryant says, “We’re looking at a version for Notebooks right now, but it’s some way off.”
Along with its announcement to crush its competitors in the near future, MeetYourFriends also plans to “make the world a more intimate and happier place.”
We’ll soon find out if it has what it takes to oust Facebook and other social network leaders. At the time of writing this article, there were 189, 069 members on MeetYourFriends. Facebook's membership is more than 500 million.
