A nurse has been reunited with her father when he was admitted into the hospital she works at after 41 years of being apart.
Wanda Rodriguez, a nurse at Calvary Hospital in the Bronx met her father for the first time when he was a patient in the hospital. She noticed the name of the new patient that had been admitted, Victor Peraza, and she knew it sounded familiar. She has not seen her father in 41 years.
"I froze for a second," Rodriguez said. "That's my father's name."
Rodriguez was born in the Bronx and her parents separated when she was still an infant. She never saw him again.
"I thought if he's my complexion, if he has green eyes, he could be my dad," she recalled. "I go in and I look at him and he looks right at me. He's dark and he has light eyes. I thought, "Oh my god, I think this is him."
When she went to his hospital room, she asked if he was comfortable. She then asked if he had any children. "Yes," she recalled him saying, "but my children are grown. I have a daughter named Gina and a daughter named Wanda."
After his response, Rodriguez said she ran out of the room. The hospital supervisor wanted to move her father to a different floor, because of conflict of interest, but Rodriguez demanded that they not do that yet.
She walked back to the room. "Hi, I'm Wanda," she told the new patient. "I'm your daughter. He said, 'I know you're my daughter.' I think he knew like I knew. When we looked at each other, we knew instantly."
Rodriguez asked her father where he had been on these years and there was an awkward silence. To her, it really didn’t matter now that they were reunited.
"I held his hand and then I was holding him and hugging him," she said. "It was a magic moment, and he started singing 'This magic moment.'"
