Lucky, a 5-year-old female Rottweiler mix, is one lucky dog to survive after being chained behind a sport utility vehicle (SUV) and dragged down the street.
As the dog was being dragged down the street by the SUV at an estimated 40 mph, two vehicles were following it honking their horns in an attempt to get the SUV to stop.
Just before the vehicle was approaching M-50, a main thoroughfare, a pickup truck pulled in front of the SUV which forced it to stop.
LSJ.com reports Guy Brown said, "If that (pickup) hadn't stopped him from going out on M-50...before pausing he added, "She's really lucky to be alive."
Freep.com reports police said 18-year-old Todd Meoak intentionally dragged the dog while it was chained behind his Chevrolet Tahoe.
The incident took place on August 15 but Meoak of Eaton Rapids was not arrested at that time as he claimed he didn't know the dog was chained behind his Tahoe. He knew the owners of the dog and on occasion would stay there.
Eaton Rapids Police Chief Paul Malewski said he was arrested later that day on a drunken driving. He is being held at Eaton County Jail on reckless driving charge, animal cruelty and some other outstanding charges. He could spend up to 93 days in jail.
Guy Brown who saw the dog being dragged and helped to get it out from under the Tahoe decided to adopt the dog when the dog's owner never showed up. Brown decided to call the dog "Lucky" because she is lucky to be alive.
Lucky is being treated at the Eastwood Veterinary Hospital for severe skin loss to parts of her body and for the loss of her pads and toenails.
Brown told them he didn't care what it cost to treat the dog he said, "That dog did not have that coming to it."
She has already had three surgeries and could need more according to Yvonne Cornell, a veterinarian assistant at the hospital.
Cornell said her pads and toenails could grow back. She said, "God had his hand on that little girl. She was a fighter. An amazing little dog."
Anyone who would like to help with the medical expenses for Lucky they can be made at Eaton Federal Savings Bank in Eaton Rapids or at the Eaton Rapids Police Department.
On Sept. 4 a car wash will be held to help with the expenses at the Eaton Rapids police and fire department complex, from 10 a.m. to noon. They are expecting Lucky to be there.
