Detroit - When a 90-year-old woman was raped and beaten in Detroit volunteers were so outraged at the brutality of the act they started patrolling the streets where the attack took place.
Detroit, MI.--On August 12 the home of a 90-year-old woman was broken into. The woman was raped, beaten and robbed.
More than 200 volunteers began patrolling their neighborhood and were using bullhorns to urge anyone who knew anything about the attack to come forward.
MyFOXdetroit.com reports one volunteer said, "I just wonder what type of world we're coming to - teenagers committing heartless acts. Detroit has a bad mark right now in America but us coming together to catch these 3 guys it shows we can do a lot more in our community."
Three teens from Detroit have been arrested and charged with home invasion, beating and sexual assault of the 90-year-old woman. They are 17-year-old Maurice Randall, 18-year-old Anthony L. Hardy and a 15-year old.
Also being charged for another home invasion are Randall and Hardy.
The charges for the 17-year-old and 18-year-old are home invasion, criminal sexual conduct first degree, assault with intent to do great bodily harm and home invasion second degree. In addition Randall is charged with receiving and concealing stolen property.
The 15-year-old was charged as a juvenile with home invasion first degree.
detnews.com reports Detroit Police Sgt. Eren Stephens said, "The assistance of the community definitely contributed to us apprehending the suspects."
Raphael B. Johnson, a community activist who led the patrols of the neighborhood, said they were able to persuade neighbors to come forward.
Johnson said,"There were two people we talked to who were able to lead the police to (the suspects). We were putting the pressure on for people to tell us what they knew, and they told us what they probably wouldn't have told the police."
A grandson of the victim, Nimrod Sherman said, "I can't thank them enough. My grandma is doing better; she's still healing. So many people sent prayers, and came out and searched with us. It was great to see."
