Disabled soldier Lance Corporal Johno Lee has been turned down for a parking permit by his local council. He lost his leg below the knee fighting in the war in Afghanistan.
It is reported in the
Daily Mail, that despite this, he has been turned down for a disabled parking permit on three separate occasions. He was apparently told that he "may get
better."
Lance Corporal Lee suffered the devastating injuries in an explosion while he was serving in Helmand Province two years ago which resulted in him being thrown into a minefield.
He told the
Daily Mail:
"I replied that they possibly did not quite understand the situation and that I thought it unlikely my leg would grow back."
"Sometimes the leg swells so badly I can't even get the prosthetic leg on. I then have to park in disabled bays otherwise I can't get into town, but then I get a ticket."
The soldier says he has parking fines which have added up to £800 because he has had to use a disabled parking bay when he uses his wheelchair.
Lance Corporal Lee, who does charity work for the armed forces, told the
Daily Mail:
"A lot of people are coming home from Afghanistan severely wounded and are deserving of recognition rather than to be disrespected by the bureaucrats."
In a statement by Nottinghamshire County Council, which was published in the
Daily Mail, they said:
"We are looking into the matter and have arranged for a member of staff to meet Mr Lee to review the situation. We will urgently assess whether he meets the criteria for a disabled parking badge as laid down by the Department of Transport."
