Baltimore - The Baltimore Museum of Art is among the finest art museums in the country, offering a wide diversity in exhibits and art styles.
One of the finest educational attractions in the eastern half of the United States is undoubtedly the Baltimore Museum of Art. Located about three miles north of Baltimore's inner harbor, and very close to Johns Hopkins University, the Baltimore Museum of Art offers patrons a rare opportunity to view a wide assortment of 19th century and contemporary art in an attractive setting. Founded in 1914 with a single work of art, the Baltimore Museum of Art today offers over 90,000 works, from such famed artists as Vincent van Gogh, Paul Cezanne, Pablo Picasso and the largest collection of Henri Matisse works in existence.
The Baltimore Museum of Art offers diverse exhibits from nearly every corner of the globe, including African, Asian, European, Native American and Pacific Island displays. Featuring prints, photos, drawings, textiles, painting and sculptures, the Baltimore Museum of Art offers an in-depth view of cultures and societies of distant lands and the people that occupy them in an easy to comprehend manner for all ages. It is because of these features that the Baltimore Museum of Art has become a favorite of students ranging from elementary school to university graduate students.
In addition to the regular exhibits, the Baltimore Museum of Art also offers sculpture gardens that encompass over three acres of space in all. The E. Kirkbride Miller Art Research Library houses over 70,000 items such as manuscripts, monographs, books and periodicals pertaining to art research, and are an invaluable tool in understanding art history. These items can be viewed by appointment only, Monday through Friday.
The Baltimore Museum of Art Shop carries books, jewelry, posters, art cards and reproductions of famous art works for sale to consumers at reasonable prices. Patrons of the Baltimore Museum of Art can dine at Gertrude's Restaurant, with seats available on the terrace when the weather is permitting.
The Baltimore Museum of Art is open Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 10 AM to 5 PM, on Saturday and Sunday from 11 AM to 6 PM and is closed on Monday and Tuesday. The Baltimore Museum of Art is also closed on the major holidays of Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's Day and July 4th.
