A nurse that had been in charge of tending to infants in the ICU at Giulesti Maternity Hospital in Bucharest has been charged with the murder of five infants. The babies died in a fire at the hospital on August 16.
Florentina Daniele Cirstea has been accused of not properly supervising the infants in her care. She was not in the room when the fire broke out. It is alleged that she left the room unattended for 12 minutes. A fire broke out during that time killing 5 and injuring six other infants. The injured infants are in critical but stable condition at Grigore Alexandru Children's Hospital.
Using a chair to break the door hospital employees entered the room on August 16 but it was already to late for the five infants. The door could only be opened with an access card. Cirstea was the only person who had a card but could not be located when the fire was discovered.
Authorities said in a press release that the hospital staff was having a party in another room when the fire started.
