Santiago - The hopeful signs began early Sunday when the probing machine broke ground to a tunnel 688 feet deep. When the tip of the probe brought back evidence of life, excitement and emotion infected relatives, authorities and Chile as a whole.
A video camera sent down the perforation a few hours later showed several helmet lights being switched on and off and from the darkness appeared the partial face of a person. The miner's face was faint and blurry. He approached the camera for a 10 cm close-up that showed the top of his head, eyes and nose. The facial features could hardly be recognizable to most in the site, but were clearly distinct to his father: “It’s my son, Florencio Avalos” he said.

Equipment from a branch of CODELCO, the National Copper Company, is being transported to the San José mine today to start the opening of a 66 cm wide perforation which should allow bringing the miners to the surface, an effort that is expected to take no less than three months.
