Mel Gibson, perceived as one of Hollywood’s volatile celebrities, crashed his 2008 Maserati into a hillside on Malibu Canyon Road Sunday night and emerged from the incident unhurt and unscratched, according to a news release from the California Highway Patrol.
reports alcohol was not involved in the accident. CHP Officer Leland Tang said an investigator concluded the accident was “non-intentional.”
At that location and on that road, it could have happened to anybody," Tang said.
Gibson, currently involved in an embittered child custody battle with his ex-girlfriend, is also a target of the paparazzi. However, Alan Nierob, publicist for Gibson, when asked if celebrity photographers were a factor in the accident, responded: “Not that I’m aware of.”
The CHP spokesman theorized Gibson was wearing his seatbelt, noting the actor survived the crash with “no injuries, not even a scratch.”
Gibson was arrested four years ago in Malibu for suspicion of driving under the influence. At that time, he became infamous during that arrest for first being belligerent with Los Angeles sheriff’s deputies and then making anti-Semitic comments.
Gibson received three years probation for his efforts in that previous incident which ended in a no-contest plea on the charge of drunken driving. He later apologized for the anti-Semitic comments, professing the comments were “blurted out in a moment of insanity.”
However, in the Sunday night crash Gibson “was extremely cooperative, he was a gentleman,” Tang said.
Although the car suffered enough damage to warrant towing, Gibson caught a ride home with a friend, according to police records.
