A massive and powerful explosion rocked a fireworks factory in northeast China killing 13 people and injured at least 148 people in the fireworks factory and other houses and establishments in the vicinity of the plant.
The explosion occurred at around 9:40 a.m. in the city of Yichun in Heilongjiang province where around 50 people were working inside the firecracker factory.
The powerful blast was felt up to two miles (five kilometers) away from the fireworks factory and smashed windows in the local government offices and other buildings.
Yahoo News reports:
The tally appeared to include workers at the factory as well as people in the surrounding area, but details were not given.
It wasn't known if all the workers had been accounted for. Calls to the local government and police rang unanswered Monday.
Eyewitness' photos posted to the Internet showed plumes of smoke curled above the plant.
In another development, a lift in a construction site carrying construction workers plunged from the 12th floor of the building under construction killing at least 11 people.
Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the elevator accident in the city of Meihekou in northeastern province of Jilin.
