RCMP boards MV Sun Sea

By KJ Mullins     Aug 13, 2010 in World
The RCMP boarded a sailing vessel under the name “MV Sun Sea” carrying 490 Tamil migrants on Friday. The vessel carried unknown individuals into Canadian waters on Thursday and Friday they were brought into port.
There has been speculation that the ship not only was carrying refugees but terrorists to Canada. The RCMP is treating this case as one of human smuggling and human trafficking.
The RCMP, Canadian Forces and Canadian Border Services Agency worked together to intervene with the Sun Sea. An RCMP Emergency Response Team boarded the ship and took control of the situation. After the ship was secured a crew from the Canadian Forces piloted the vessel and its passengers into port at Esquimalt, BC this morning..
After the ship was brought into port the CBSA took over processing responsibility for those on board. The primary focus of the investigation is to ensure that Canadians and those aboard the sailing vessel are safe. The investigation is ongoing and as updates come forward they will be provided to the public.
