Shanklin - The manager of an apartment block found two dead bodies when she went to find out why their were children screaming in a flat on the Isle of Wight.
Two boys under the age of five were crying and running around inside the apartment on August 9. The door was ajar so she walked in to find the distraught children, a man with a noose around his neck hanging from a rafter, and a woman’s body on a bed.
The dead people, who have not yet been named, are a married couple who were in their thirties. They had been in a Regal Court flats in Shanklin for a year
Jim Isted, who owns shop next to the building, told The Daily Mail that the woman heard “shouting and a rumpus coming from the flat and went upstairs because she was concerned.”
“The noise was their two young children screaming and crying because they were so traumatised.
“The front door was ajar so she walked in and directly in front of her she could see the husband’s legs dangling in the front room. He'd apparently hanged himself.
She then went into the next room, the bedroom, where the door was also ajar and she saw the wife's legs. She was lying dead on the bed.”
Hampshire police spokesman Duncan Smith said that after police were called, at 6.30pm, they went to the address.
“The death of the man is not being treated as suspicious,” he told The Daily Mail. “The circumstances surrounding the woman's death are believed to be suspicious although she has not been stabbed.
“The flat remains sealed off to allow for ongoing forensic examinations by specialist scenes of crime officers.
“Whilst retaining an open mind, detectives are not looking for anyone else suspected of being directly responsible for the deaths.
“Two young children, who are believed to be the couple's sons, were inside the flat when police arrived. They were unharmed.
“Both children are now staying at a family friend's address where they are safe and well.”
One neighbour, who lives at Regal Court, but wished to remain anonymous, told the Isle of Wight County Press: "I have heard the couple shouting and arguing quite a few times through the day and night. They have got two children as well; who I also heard screaming on several occasions. I don't think they have been living there long either. I can't believe this has happened, it is just terrible."
