Three crew members of a cargo ship were rescued after a distress call was received by authorities off Philippine coast. The rescued crew includes the ship captain and two crew members. One dead body was recovered by the rescue team.
The sinking of the cargo ship was blamed on rough seas brought about by passing typhoons and other weather disturbances in the Philippines.
Bad weather prevented the coast guard from immediately dispatching rescue teams to look for the other 12 crew members. Two choppers were dispatched earlier but had to abort the rescue mission due to bad weather in the accident scene.
"While we are yearning to search and rescue the crew... we would like also to ensure the safety of rescuers," Lieutenant Colonel Edgardo Arevalo told reporters.
Yahoo News reports:
The MV SF Freighter, with 16 Filipino crewmen, radioed a distress call on Saturday after its engine faltered while it was being battered by heavy waves off the central island of Dos Hermanas, the coast guard said in a statement.
The vessel was laden with steel and was en route to the port city of Cebu when it radioed its last position.
According to the coastguard report, the vessel sank shortly after last contact and the captain ordered the crew to abandon ship.
In the meantime, Philippine weather bureau forecasters have earlier announced the exit of typhoon Esther from Philippine area but bad weather still persist in the northern part of the country.
At least two more typhoons are expected to hit the Philippines this month.
