article imageTurkish bridegroom accidentally kills wedding guests

By Lynn Curwin     Aug 8, 2010 in Crime
Celebrations turned deadly when a bridegroom in Turkey, firing an AK-47 in celebration, accidentally killed three of his relatives.
The BBC reported the groom lost control of the weapon while trying to fire in the air, as is traditional.
Bullets sprayed the wedding guests, seriously injuring the groom’s father and two aunts. They were taken to hospital, where they died.
The groom has been arrested.
The accident took place in Akcagoze, a village in the south-eastern province of Gaziantep.
The Anatolia news agency reported that eight other people were wounded.
In Turkey, it is not unusual to shoot into the air to celebrate weddings, circumcisions or sports victories. This has led to deaths and injuries on other occasions.
The country has failed to curb the practice although harsher punishments have been imposed.
