New York - A JetBlue flight attendant was arrested following an altercation with a passenger but he has now become a hero to many people.
On August 9, Steven Slater, 39, was working on a JetBlue flight from Pittsburgh to New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport.
Before the plane, with about 100 passengers on board, had completely stopped a passenger stood up and began to remove luggage from an overhead compartment.
The New York Times reported that a law enforcement official, who spoke on condition of anonymity said:
“Mr. Slater instructed the person to remain seated. The passenger defied him. Mr. Slater reached the passenger just as the person was pulling down the luggage, which struck Mr. Slater in the head.
“Mr. Slater asked for an apology. The passenger instead cursed at him. Mr. Slater got on the plane’s public-address system and cursed out the passenger for all to hear. Then, after declaring that 20 years in the airline industry was enough, he blurted out, ‘It’s been great!’ He activated the inflatable evacuation slide at a service exit and left the world of flight attending behind.”
Before leaving the plane Slater grabbed a beer from the beverage cart.
Slater drove to his home in Belle Harbor, Queens, where police found him and charged him with criminal mischief and reckless endangerment.
Several officers from New York City and the Port Authority swarmed his home.
“It was like there was a hostage in there,” Curt Krakowski, who was working on the deck of a house across the street, told The New York Times.
The New York Times was told that Slater was often in California, caring for his sick mother, and had also cared for his father when he was dying.
Facebook sites with names such as 'Free Steven Slater' and 'Steven Slater: Hero of the Working Man' have now been set up.
