Going to high school can be hard for kids. Trying to meet teacher's expectations and worrying about fitting in are just two of the struggles kids deal with. In Canada kids have someone to talk to about their concerns-The Kids Help Phone.
I know its a little early to be worring about September but I'm already having sleepless nights and anxieity. I am the one everyone likes to pick on. I'm fat, I'm stupid, Im ugly, I'm stupid, I'm poor, I'm stupid, I'm fat, I'm stupid. Im dreading the day the bus comes - the bus is the worst nightmare of my life bc its none stop abuse all the way to school. I don't want friends I just want to be left alone! -post from Kids Help Phone Ask Us Online counselling service
The Kids Help Phone is gearing up for the coming school year. Canada has more than six million kids returning to public school, colleges and universities next month. Many of those students need to have strategies in place to help them.
"We know that the #1 way kids hear about us is through their school. By joining efforts with educators, we can foster the emotional health and well-being of Canada's children and youth," says Dr. Janice Currie, Vice President, Counselling Services at Kids Help Phone, in a press release.
Kids Help Phone said that parents and guardians can help ease the stress for their kids by talking. Many kids hear that their parents aren't willing to hear them out. Let your children know that it's safe to talk with you and that you want to understand their concerns.
Letting kids know that there isn't anything that they could say that will damage the relationship you show irreparably allows kids to be more open about their toughest problems.
Kids often want their parents just to listen and not rush to fix the problems. Ask your children what they think would be the most helpful solution.
Remember you don't have to have all the answers. If you are stuck call the Kids Help Phone.
