article imageRapist who cut his own wrists is jailed

By Lynn Curwin     Aug 2, 2010 in Crime
A Basildon man who cut his own wrists after the woman he had just violently raped called police has been jailed for eight years.
Michael Cross, 37, had sent the woman text messages asking for sex, and was angry with her for refusing.
He went to her home on May 17, dragged her into a bedroom and raped her twice. He then went downstairs and drank vodka.
The woman was able to call police, as well as her partner, while he was downstairs.
When officers found him, in Basildon, he had cut his wrists. He admitted to the rapes he had just committed, as well as admitting to raping the same woman in January.
At Southend Crown Court, prosecutor Andrew Jackson said Cross was a long-standing alcoholic who had also started to use cocaine, reported The Echo.
Stephen Rose told the court that Cross was deeply remorseful, had self-harmed several times since being arrested, and had worked hard to beat his addiction.
The Echo quoted Judge John Lodge as saying: “It is your letter which best describes what you have done. You say it was vile and degrading – acts which nobody should have to go through. And you are quite right.”
Cross is required to sign the sex offenders’ register for life.
