Bridgeport - Several certified organic sprouts products sold by Specialty Farms including organic alfalfa sprouts and organic sprout salad are being recalled because they may be contaminated with Listeria Monocytogenes, the FDA recently announced
The recall was issued by Speciality Farms on July 23 and was expanded July 30.
The recall includes Organic Alfalfa Sprouts Blend and Organic Sprout Salad sold in the northeastern United States because of possible health risk to consumers.
Listeria Monocytogenes is an infectious organism that can cause high fever, severe headaches, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea even in healthy people. Those particularly susceptible include those with compromised immune systems, the very young or elderly, and pregnant women; severe reactions can include miscarriages, stillbirths.
Recalled organic sprouts and sprout salads were sold in 4-ounce plastic containers in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania and Vermont (distributed by Cooseman's NY), and have a sell-by date of 7/26/2010 or 8/3/2010:

Recalled organic sprouts were also sold under in 4-ounce plastic containers and 8-ounce plastic resealable bags (pictured) with sell-by dates of 8/1/2010 at stores in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Vermont.
Specialty-Farms, LLC is currently in the process of determining exactly where this potential Lm contamination could be occurring in its facility and is immediately remedying the potential sources as they are identified. Specialty Farms, LLC hopes to return to full sprout production soon.

Consumers who have purchased this product are urged to return them to the point of purchase for refund and may contact Specialty-Farms, LLC with questions at (203) 366-6919 between the hours of 9:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. EST.

This is the second food safety problem affecting fresh sprouts this year. This spring, dozens of people were sickened by Salmonella contamination of Caldwell Fresh Foods alfalfa sprouts.
