article imageIs Mayweather Trashing Golden Boy By Signing Up With Don King?

By Leo Reyes     Jul 31, 2010 in Sports
Floyd Mayweather, Jr seems exasperated with the way Oscar de la Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions is handling his proposed mega fight with Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao.
News reports about a series of meetings between Lil Floyd and promoter Don King have fueled speculations the undefeated American boxer is courting King to be his promoter.
Brad Cooney of says, "Don King and Floyd Mayweather have been spending some time together in Florida and from the reports that I am getting, they are in serious talks to do business with one another. Perhaps this is what is needed in order to finally get the big fight done?"
Boxing observers say Mayweather is free to choose his official promoter who can handle and resuscitate his failed negotiations with Manny Pacquiao and take care of his future fights.
There is no doubt Don King and Lil Floyd could go along very well. They seem to blend so well as they both share common interests.
The absence of a legal arrangement between Mayweather and Oscar de la Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions could be seen as the reason for the failed Pacquiao-Mayweather fight.
Mayweather's latest posturing could be interpreted as a prelude to a possible legal arrangement between his own promotional company and Don King Promotions.
And since there are no contractual obligations between Mayweather and Golden Boy Promotions, a new contract can be drawn between his company and Don King without legal complications.
If this happens, a fresh bid for the revival of the failed Mayweather-Pacquiao fight could be made for the most wanted fight of the year to be staged early or mid next year.
Brad Cooney quoted a Mayweather fan in Mississippi saying, "Don King can make this fight happen. Floyd went to the right guy. Both Arum and King are the Godfathers of boxing, and they will be able to make this fight happen."
Although Don King and Bob Arum are not exactly the best of friends, the aren't either the worst of enemies.
Bob Arum has reportedly said he has no problem working with Don King.
“Arum and I could work together well, we could work hand-in-glove. We can make things happen. I know that and Bob has said it as well.”, Don King said.
“I know what Floyd can do in the ring and he knows what I can do to bring the most money,” King said.
“We're both proven performers. I appreciate that about him and I think he appreciates that about me.”, he added.
So far, nor reaction or announcement has been issued by Golden Boy Promotions in connection with the impending collaboration between Mayweater, Jr and Don King.
