Action sports have grown in popularity over the past 15 years in large thanks to the success of events like the X Games and video games, such as the Tony Hawk Pro's Skater franchise. Now, ESPN wants to get fans more involved.
Thanks to YouTube and brilliant photography action sports like skateboarding, BMX and Moto X have seen a steady rise in popularity. That popularity has sparked a need to go bigger and invent more tricks that capture the attention of the casual action sports fan.
The X Games is one of the most watched and highly publicized, action sports event in existence today. Fans have steadily come out in droves to watch the weekend festivities. ESPN has pushed the multimedia envelope seeking to capitalize on the success of previous X Games by increasing fan interaction during the X Games' various scheduled televised competitions.
On the first day of X Games Sixteen, which will start on July 29, in Los Angeles, California, ESPN has launched an Internet application called, PunkMyPic, that will allow fans to create their very own X Games poster. This recent technological innovation has the multitasking, action sports junkie at the heart of its design, allowing for a fan to make his or her poster while walking to work or during a break in the work day.
The X Games PunkMyPic poster is the joint venture of aVinci Media Corporation and ESPN. It represents a bold new way of connecting sports fans with various social media networks. The product lets fans text or email a picture of themselves to xgames@punkmypic.com and receive a free poster of themselves in a reply message. The PunkMyPic poster can be shared on social media networks, emailed to friends or sent via multimedia message by mobile phone.
ESPN will broadcast the X Games live on its family of networks as well as stream the weekend of events live on ESPN3.
X Games favorites, Travis Pastrana, David Mirra and Bob Burnquist are scheduled to compete at X Games Sixteen. Late scratches include the inventor of the mega ramp and skateboarding pioneer, Danny Way as well as Moto X rider, Blake Williams.
