Pontiac - In an effort to capitalize on the success of this year's World Cup in South Africa, Fox Soccer Channel has announced it will showcase a match between European soccer giants AC Milan and Panathinaikos FC on its network.
"We are very pleased to have Fox Soccer Channel bring the Silverdome's return as a venue for world-class soccer to its viewers," said Steve Apostolopoulos, director of sports for Silverdome manager Triple Sports & Entertainment told Fox told Fox Soccer. "We're excited to give soccer fans a preview of two teams that they'll see soon in UEFA Champions League play on Fox Soccer Channel and Fox Soccer Plus."
Billed as "The Clash of the Titans," the match between AC Milan and Panathinaikos will take place on August 6, at 8 p.m. EDT inside the Silverdome in Pontiac, Michigan. This marks the first time in eight years that the Silverdome will be home to a live broadcast sporting event.
The AC Milan/Panathinaikos match will be the first time international soccer has been played at the Silverdome in sixteen years when it was once a venue for the 1994 FIFA World Cup. The Silverdome was also home to the Detroit Express in the days of the North American Soccer League.
Natural grass is being planted once again in the indoor environment of the Silverdome in preparation for "The Clash of the Titans" as both AC Milan and Panathinaikos will close out their preseason schedules in Michigan to get ready for domestic league and UEFA Champions League play.
Both clubs have made their mark over the years on European soil as top flight sports organizations and giants of the game. Panathinaikos is coming off winning its 20th Greek domestic league title and AC Milan has won 22 international trophies and finished third in its 2009-2010 Italian Serie A League campaign.
Filling the 82,000 seat facility is coming in second to Triple Sports Entertainment and Apostolopoulos. The concern not surprisingly is on what to do about the bee hive buzzing of the now infamous, vuvuzela and how the horn might effect fan interaction.
Apostolopoulos said to US Business Media "The most important thing is the fan experience. Many people say they don't like the vuvuzelas, but plenty of fans clearly enjoyed blowing them in the stands at the FIFA World Cup. We're trying to see how many of our potential visitors feel strongly one way or the other before we make a decision," explained Apostolopoulos.
Roger Faulkner, an advisor to Triple Sports Entertainment, took a harder stance when speaking to US Business Media on the long, cylindrical plastic horns. "I simply cannot stand those terrible things. The noise drowns out the singing, the chants and the cheers that make a soccer game such a unique experience and replaces all of that with the sound of an attack by giant plastic bees."
Fans can cast their vote on whether to ban vuvuzelas or not here.
