article imageHeat wave kills 66 in Japan, thousands hospitalized

By Leo Reyes.
At least 66 people died of heat stroke and more than 15,000 others were brought to various hospitals in Japan for treatment due to soaring summer temperature.
Early this month after the rainy season ended, temperature rose to 95 degrees Fahrenheit, according to Japan Meteorogical Agency.
Yahoo news reports:
In the week to Sunday alone, 9,436 people across the island-nation were taken to hospitals and 57 of them were confirmed killed by heat stroke, the Fire and Disaster Management Agency said.
The previous most deadly known heatwave came in 2008, the first year data was kept, when 47 people were killed in July and August, said the agency. Last year, 16 people were killed by heat in those two months.
To some business establishment, the soaring summer temperature has resulted in increased profits for the businesses dealing in cold beverages, beer, ice cream and related products.
In the beer market, where a rise of 1C will boost shipments by 1 million bottles, major breweries are raising output to meet soaring demand.
Asahi Breweries saw its combined sales of beer and happoshu, a beer substitute, jumped 40 percent from a year earlier in the first eight days of the month.
Sales of air conditioning units, electric fans and related products were also reported to be increasing as summer temperature continues to rise.
