article imageFormer CIA director considers US attack on Iran as ‘inexorable’

Washington - According to Michael Hayden, director of the Central Intelligence Agency under President George W. Bush, Tehran’s continued pursuit of a nuclear program makes US military action against Iran inevitable.
The retired United States Air Force four-star general, former Director of the National Security Agency and Director of the Central Intelligence Agency from May 2006 to February 2009, said in an interview with CNN’s State of the Union on Sunday that a military operation against Iran seems now more likely than ever because no matter what the U.S. does through diplomacy, Tehran continues to push ahead with its suspected nuclear program.
Michael Hayden said that during his time as head of the CIA a military strike was "very low in the list" of options to stop the Iranian government. But now such an action seems inevitable. Hayden predicted that Iran will pursue its nuclear program until it is just a step below what is necessary to have a real nuclear weapon, “and that would be just as destabilizing to the region as if they actually had a nuclear bomb.”
U.S. officials have said that military action remains an option if sanctions fail to prevent Iran achieving its purpose. Tehran insists that its atomic work has only peaceful purposes such as generating electricity.
According to the Israel-based news website DEBKAfile, Hayden’s statements seem to confirm that the military option against Iran has climbed to the top of President Obama's list of priorities and that the US President switched course after hearing Saudi King Abdullah assert explicitly: "We cannot live with a nuclear Iran." DEBKAfile asserts that the Saudi ruler also said that he no longer believes that diplomacy or sanctions will have any effect and made it clear that “if the Americans continued to back away from direct action to terminate Iran's advance on a nuclear bomb, the Saudi and its allies would go their own way on the nuclear issue.”
