article imageLane Kiffin poaches Titans coach

By Michael Bearak     Jul 25, 2010 in Sports
Lane Kiffin might be the most hated man in the eyes of many people from Tennessee. After bailing on the Tennessee Volunteers after 14 months on the job he came back and poached the Titans' running backs coach.
When Lane Kiffin bolted from Tennessee for USC most Volunteer fans were angry. The man had talked about how much he loved being at Tennessee, and he loved the Volunteers when he arrived and 14 months later he cruised out of town for the warm beaches of Los Angeles and USC.
Now Kiffin has had the audacity to come back to the state, this time to recruit a coach from the Tennessee Titans' staff. That normally isn't a big deal and to Titans head coach Jeff Fisher the departure of running backs coach Kennedy Pola to become the offensive coordinator at USC would be a great move upward and he would have happily given his blessing. Fisher would be even more excited over Pola's departure to USC because Fisher himself is a USC alum.
This time though Fisher wasn't so happy because Kiffin supposedly didn't have the courtesy to even call him before hiring Pola. Instead Pola broke the news to Fisher, and it was after that when Kiffin called and left a voicemail, undoubtedly avoiding a direct confrontation with Fisher for not calling ahead of time to let him know he wanted to talk to Pola.
On Saturday Fisher was quoted in the Tennessean saying,
"I am very disappointed in Lane Kiffin's approach to this. Typically speaking, when coaches are interested in hiring or discussing potential employment from coaches on respective staffs there is a courtesy call made from the head coach or athletic director indicating there is an interest in talking to the assistant. So I am very disappointed in the lack of professionalism on behalf of Lane, to call me and leave me a voicemail after Kennedy had informed me he had taken the job. It is just a lack of professionalism."
This also means that the Titans are one week out from the start of training camp and have now lost their running backs coach. Fisher did announce that the team did plan to hire from within to fill the position.
