An attempt to be kind resulted in one elderly woman being fined. The Leicester resident was fined £80 for littering after she threw bread crumbs to the birds.
SWNS reported that wardens fined the woman after two street wardens saw her sprinkling bread crumbs over her garden railings onto the pavement .
The woman, who has not been named, argued but to no avail.
Neighbours said the fine should be overturned.
“This is absolutely ridiculous,”
SWNS reported John Williams as saying. “All the old dear was trying to do was feed the birds.
“But these two burly street wardens jumped on her and treated her like a criminal. I’ve been told that they were really aggressive.
“They should be spending their time and money catching the real litter bugs who leave drugs and beer cans in the area.”
A woman pointed out that The bread would have been eaten the birds and would not have caused a litter problem.
A voluntary group called
St Peter’s Neighbourhood Monitoring started a campaign to catch people who were littering. The organization posts photos of “litter louts” on the web site. The area has had problems with .rubbish from take-aways and syringes from drug users.
Albert Berra, a member of the group, told SWNS that the elderly woman may have had good intentions when she threw out the bread but that there is no excuse. He said food could attract rats, mice and cockroaches.
