Albuquerque, NM - A gunman arrived at his former workplace and began a shooting spree resulting in the deaths of two victims before he killed himself.
The
LA Times reports that the death toll "is as high as six" from a shooting rampage that took place earlier today.
After the police reported that six people had died, they "revised the toll to three," reports
CNN. "Police said there had been miscommunication among officers and emergency personnel in the first counting." The 37-year-old shooter took his own life and is included in that death toll. Four others were wounded during the shooting. The name of the shooter has not been disclosed.
The incident took place just after 9:00 a.m. with police responding to a 911 call at 9:26 a.m. (11:26 a.m. ET).
According to the
LA Times, the gunman was a former employee of the fiber optics company at which the shootings occurred. The gunman's girlfriend "with whom he had two children, still worked at the" Emcore Corporation. It is unclear if the girlfriend is among the dead.
CNN reports, however, that Albuqueque Police Chief Ray Schultz said, "One of the victims -- a current employee at Emcore Corp -- is believed to be the wife or girlfriend of the shooter."
Chief Schultz was quoted by
ABC News as saying, "We are classifying this as a domestic violence workplace situation." The gunman was reported to have a previous domestic violence incident.
Authorities reportedly took the gunman's children into protective custody.
The 85 employees of Emcore Corporation were taken "to Manzano Mesa Multigenerational Center, a city-run community center, for interviews with detectives," reports
ABC News.
