A man was taken into custody before the start of the final World Cup match between Spain and the Netherlands after running onto the field.
In more stupid human news (in light of the man whose buddies lit him on fire), sporting events always seem to bring out idiots who feel they have a place on the field. Before the start of Sunday’s World Cup final a man decided he just had to touch the trophy.
A man jumped onto the field in Johannesburg and raced for his moment in the sun, and possibly (maybe more than likely) a spot on ESPN highlights, to have a shot at touching the World Cup trophy that was on display before the start of play between the Netherlands and Spain.
Both the Associated Press and Reuters reported the man’s dash. Security and stewards tackled the man to the ground and then seven security guards hauled the man off up the tunnel passed the waiting players. Of course the crowd cheered at his antics, but his quest was unsuccessful as he was stopped before being able to lay his hands on the trophy.
