People sometimes end up in the back of a sheriff’s van because of fighting, but most don’t fight while in the van. A couple of 20-year-old Nova Scotia men were the exception.
While being transported from the Nova Scotia Correctional Facility to a courthouse in Dartmouth, Maselle Mandez Beals and Aaron Gregory Marriott got into a fight in the back of the provincial sheriff service van on July 9, even though both had been handcuffed and shackled.
CBC News reported that the officer driving the vehicle noticed the disturbance. When the van arrived at the courthouse about a dozen officers were waiting. Marriott had one hand free when the van was opened.
According to
The Chronicle Herald, Beals was bleeding from cuts on his face, while Marriott had blood on his shirt but did not appear to be injured.
CBC reported that Marriott remarked that it was a “nice little scrap” and said "Maselle, I didn't hurt you, did I?"
Beals reportedly said, "Nope, wasn't nothing, buddy."
Beals yelled out that he would be unavailable for court, as he was taken away in an ambulance.
Marriott faces three charges of attempted murder from 2008, but had been on his way to court for sentencing for a charge of property mischief, resulting from a jail riot in April 2009. Beals was being taken to court for weapons charges and breaches of court orders.
