article imageNew pictures of a healthy Fidel Castro show him out and about

Havana - He's 83-years old, and he's been very sick for the past few years, but now there are new photos showing Fidel Castro in fairly robust condition, laughing and talking with workers at a Scientific Think Tank.
In these images, released Saturday, July 10, Cuba's Supreme Commander Fidel Castro is smiling and wearing a track suit as he makes a rare trip outside to visit the National Center for Scientific Investigation in Havana. Associated Press reports that these are the first photos of the 83-year old Castro in public since he fell seriously ill in July of 2006.
The photographs were posted on the blogs of two Cuban Journalists and later in the day, more images from the same event were posted on Cubadebate, a state-run media website.
Castro appears to be slightly stooped, but otherwise healthy in the pictures, which were reportedly taken Wednesday. Cuban media outlets are strictly controlled by the government, and it is considered significant that the photos appeared on the blogs of two official Cuban journalists and later on Cubadebate.
Fidel remains as the head of Cuba's Communist Party and regularly publishes his thoughts on world events in opinion pieces. The two brothers have ruled Cuba since overthrowing dictator Fulgencio Batista in 1959. The state of Fidel's health has been part of a constant rumor mill, especially among Cuban exiles living in Florida.
Castro commented last year that he doesn't think he will see Barack Obama re-elected in 2012. Although it was difficult to decipher if he was passing judgment on his own life expectancy or the political fortunes of the U.S. president.
