Argentina's World Cup soccer team was eliminated from play on Saturday and returned home amidst tight security Sunday after their early exit.
Argentina was forced to return home early as Germany ended South American hopes of a World Cup Championship in convincing fashion Saturday with a 4-0 trouncing. There were high hopes for the Argentinian team and many fans felt the loss was humiliating and far too early.
Sunday an Aerolineas Argentinas flight arrived in Buenos Aires amid high security. Police limited access to the international terminal of the airport as the team was met on the tarmac by customs and immigration. The players and coaches were processed on the airplane, after which time the team disembarked and were taken via bus to the Argentine Football Association's headquarters. The team never entered the terminal, which was limited to only passengers, flight crew and airport workers after a two-mile radius was formed.
Fans took to the streets supporting the team and holding up signs in support of coach Diego Maradona. ESPN is reporting that several players have asked that Maradona remain as the team's coach despite their early dismissal from the World Cup.
