Geoffrey McDonald, 60, was violently attacked and robbed of £250,000 at his eight-bedroom villa in Eygalieres, near Avignon, the south of France.
According to Daily Mail, the robbers broke into McDonald's home while the heir and his wife were out for the evening. When the couple came home, the robbers beat McDonald with baseball bats before stealing money, jewelery and passports.
The couple's lawyer Gilles-Jean Portejoie said: "Mr McDonald was violently beaten in the assault which left him and his wife severely shocked."
Local officials said the McDonald's robbery was the latest in a string of robberies targeting the area's wealthy residents.
Christian Pasta, public prosecutor in the nearby town of Tarascon, said: "There have been a string of at least ten robberies in the area this year.
"We suspect there is an organized gang or robbers targeting wealthy homeowners and have an ongoing investigation to bring them to justice."
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie recently bought a £10million chateau in the same village as the McDonald's home. It is one of the most sought-after locations for the wealthy in Provence, France.
The McDonald couple gave statements to the police before returning to their United States home.
