Berlin - Berlin enjoyed another fantastic day of football, after the national German football team defeated the powerful English team with an historic 4-1 win. Germany moves on to the quarter-finals and faces Argentina next.
From Prenzlauer Berg to Neukölln, the German capital has celebrated its heroes and the triumphal victory against the old enemies of England.
Turkish, Latinos, Italians, Lebanese, Palestinians and many other foreign communities in Berlin met in many places around the city with the flag of Germany in one hand and the flag of their own country of provenience in the other hand.
"This team represents all of us," explains Amir, born in Berlin from a Turkish family. "My father came here as "Gastarbeiter", immigrant worker, as the father of Mesut Oezil, who is now a national hero for Germany."
Mesut Özil is a German professional footballer of Turkish descent who plays for Werder Bremen. During this World Cup, he praised a goal against Ghana who allowed Germany to qualify for the Round of 16.
"These players are the new faces of the Germany," continues Amir. "They are young, they come from all over the world, they are different one from each others, but together they win."
In fact, while German team captain Philipp Lahm and his deputy Bastian Schweinsteiger hail from Bavaria, 11 members of the 23-man World Cup 2010 squad have foreign roots.
Five were born outside Germany. Forwards Miroslav Klose, Lukas Podolski and Piotr Trochowski were born in Poland, winger Marko Marin in Yugoslavia and striker Cacau in Brazil.
Midfielder Mesut Oezil is of Turkish descent.
Germany plays Argentinanext, which beat Mexico 3-1, in the quarterfinals on Saturday in Cape Town.
