Toronto - Violent protesters merged with peaceful protesters, turning Toronto into a war zone during the first day of the G20 summit.
Toronto has been taken over by protesters, both peaceful and violent. The police in riot gear were working to keep the peace. At Queen Street West and Spadina Avenue there were little signs of violence from the police. At one point protesters rushed the police and were taken down.
Even those who had been padded down said that in the end, when the police were sure that the situation was safe, that they were respectful.
Mayor David Miller spoke with disgust about the protesters that brought violence to his city.
"It's sad for the city that people decided to come to the city for this type of illegal acts. Our city is not unsafe. We need to step back and be calm and let the police do what they are trained to do."
The police were concerned that the only reports that would be coming from the media were those of violence and not that they were there to do their job and keep the city safe.
Most of the protesters in the area just west of the location where the summit is taking place were peaceful. They sang or shouted their issues but did not bring violence into the equation. In a city like Toronto where protesting is a norm, it was the norm.
However there were those who were at the scene to incite violence. From stomping on the roofs of police cruisers to jumping out of windows to electrical lines.
The police are now in Queen's Park according to local media. Some say that police are shooting off pepper spray balls. Those reports have not been confirmed. Police are charging the protesters trying to stop people from going towards the security zone.
Trying to report what is going on in Toronto is not easy. The Internet comes in bits and pieces.
