Kitchener - To further the cause of getting American actor and talk show host Ellen Degeneres to appear as Grand Marshal for the Kitchener/Waterloo Oktoberfest parade, organizers held a mass chicken dance.
On June 24, 2010, a mass chicken dance was held at Kitchener City Hall. Estimated attendance ranged from 500 to 2,000 attendees; most likely around 800. The event took place from 6pm until 7:15pm.
It was a beautiful evening and city hall was filled with positivity and great cameraderie. Children were running around wearing Oktoberfest costumes, others were wading in the pool in front of city hall and some were showing a photographer how they would do the chicken dance. There were lots of unique signs and hats. And, in what seems to be a frightening wave of the future, one vuvuzela.
The crowd grows.

A stage was set up on the pedestrian walkway directly in front of city hall. Various Oktoberfest items were placed around the square; an inflatable Hans Haus, a maypole with a Canadian flag on top, a giant inflatable beaver that appeared on the 2010 Olympic Games opening ceremonies and had been purchased by the city, and the infamous inflatable lion.

At approximately 6pm, the ceremonies began and were hosted by Carlos and Adele from radio station 91.5 The Beat. Other people introduced and presented onstage were the mayors of both Kitchener and Waterloo, Oktoberfest mascot Onkel Hans, the creator of the Facebook group, and various Oktoberfest organizers.
The host introduced the Queen of the Chicken dance, then they stepped aside and introduced the other people on stage, then they stepped aside and showed the crowd waving their Ellen signs. They everyone performed the chicken dance and sang a special "ellenized" version of Roll out the Barrel. The proceedings were filmed and the video will be sent to Ellen Degeneres.
