The All England Club has been treated to a match that looks like it will break most tennis records before it is over. The John Isner-Nicolas Mahut match may take at least three days to finish.
Darkness has suspended the match between U.S.'s John Isner, and France's Nicolas Mahut on day two of their marathon match at Wimbledon guaranteeing a third day of play in this first round match.
On Tuesday darkness suspended play after the fourth match. Now after day two of play, again darkness set in, forcing a suspension of play during the fifth match which was all knotted up at 59-59. Toss the record books out hte window at this point too.
Isner and Mahut have been playing for 10 hours on the head. Still, the fifth set by itself went seven hours and six minutes. The fifth (and unfinished set) by itself has been long enough to break the 2004 record for the longest match at 6:33 during that year's French Open.
When it is all said and done the record for the number of aces has been broken already as the old record being 78 for any tournament. Right now Isner has 98 while Mahut has 95 and that could possibly go up for either man on Thursday. They have already played 881 points of those 612 were in the fifth set alone.
The record at Wimbledon for games is 112 set in 1969. Isner and Manhut broke that record in the fifth match alone. Thursday it might be decided, but on Wednesday Isner had four chances to end the game, but Mahut was able to save the match each time.
Shortly after 9pm, England time, the two men met at the net with a tournament official and it was decided that for a second day darkness would prevent them from finishing the match. Mahut was quoted after the game as saying, "I want to play, but I can't see."
