article imageMadoff says he gave $9 billion to friends before getting caught

By David Silverberg     Jun 21, 2010 in Crime
Convicted Ponzi schemer Bernie Madoff allegedly told a prison inmate he funneled $9 billion to three friends before getting caught for his white-collar crime, the New York Post reports.
Who received the money? "I think it was personal friends," the inmate said, according to the Post article.
The unnamed inmate at the medium-security prison in Butner, NC, said Madoff told him his partner in crime Frank DiPascali knows who the recipients are and "that he suspects DiPascali is using that information to cut a better deal with the feds."
DiPascali pleaded guilty to 10 felonies in connection with the Madoff case.
Madoff, 72, who reportedly scammed investors out of more than $60 billion via a Ponzi scheme, is serving a 150-year prison term.
The inmate also dispelled some rumorus concerning Madoff's prison run. Media reports stated Madoff was recently attacked after guards found him with smashed glasses and a bloody head. The inmate says the reports are untrue; Madoff supposedly fell in the middle of the night while getting water because an antidepressant drug he had begun taking earlier reacted badly with another medication.
The inmate added Madoff is sorry for the pain he caused to his victims. "He also feels a lot of pain for what he did to people" and hopes they are able to recover at least some of the money he swindled from them, the inmate said.
