article imageCzech hero catches runaway tram on a bike now may face prison

A Czech tram driver chased the empty, runaway tram on a bicycle until he caught up to it and stopped it, then suffered a heart attack. He now may face prison time for "breaching his work duties".
The driver was called a hero after he chased and stopped the empty tram on a bicycle.
According to Sky News, the 50-year-old driver borrowed the bicycle of a passerby, chased the tram down and managed to board and stop it, but then had a heart attack after the stress of the whole ordeal.
The tram, not having its brakes on, broke through the tram depot gate and crossed a busy street. It traveled on its tracks for a kilometer, despite the technicians turning off the power, before the driver caught up to it and stopped it.
Now the hero driver could face a prison sentence of up to three years if he is convicted of a "serious breach of work duties."
Rail safety inspection spokesman Martin Drapal said they ruled out possible defect, leaving the cause of the runaway tram as the driver's own human error.
A hospital spokeswoman said the driver who suffered the heart attack for his heroic deed is not in "immediate danger."
