article imageSam Raimi will direct 'Wizard of Oz' Prequel

By Will Hunter     Jun 20, 2010 in Entertainment
Former Spiderman director Sam Raimi has been cofirmed as the director of Disney's Wizard of Oz reboot. Amidst rumours the prequel will star Robert Downey Jr., Raimi is set to direct the already titled Oz: The Great And Powerful.
The film will be set in the years prior to the 1939 original, the wizard being a circus wrangler who is transported by tornado into the wonderous land of Oz, mistaken for a know-it-all.
Downey Jr. is still yet to be confirmed, but it has been stated that the script will be written with the star in mind.
Disney executives are developing the project in the hopes they will produce a hit similar in magnitude to Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, one of the highest grossing films of 2010.
The film will be marked as the first project for Raimi since 2009's horror film Drag Me To Hell, since he was removed from Spiderman 4 in favour of Sony rebooting the franchise.
It remains to be seen what this means for Raimi's World of Warcraft film adapation, currently set on IMDb for a 2013 release date.
