article imageOp-Ed: A Golden Obscenity? The world's most expensive coin for sale

Vienna - Produced by the Royal Canadian Mint, the biggest coin in the world is more than half a meter wide, weighs 100 kilogram and will be on auction in Vienna next week. How weird does one have to be in order to buy this, to want to own this?
With the price of gold recently having hit a record high, as reported on Digital Journal, it may seem timely to some people that the world's biggest and most heavy golden coin - according to the Guinness Book of Records - will be auctioned this month.
The coin, made of the purest gold (999.9 / 1000), weighs 3,527 ounces and is 21 inches (53 cm) in diameter. It also has, according to the website of the Dorotheum auction house, a face value of CAD 1 million (see image), although starting bids will be based on the actual bullion price on the day of the auction. One side of the coin shows three maple leaves, Canada’s national symbol, and the other bears the image of Queen Elizabeth II..
Bloomberg Business Week has reported that the coin, listed in the current edition of Guinness World Records, has previously been on loan to the collection of Vienna’s Museum of Art History, yet the coming auction is on behalf of unidentified liquidators for the Austrian investment and venture-capital firm AvW Invest AG - who seem to need a bit of cash.

Being auctioned at a time like the present one, with individuals, companies, banks and nations being on the brink of financial collapse, the questions that rose in my mind were "How weird does one have to be in order to want to own this?" and "Will someone dare to buy it?" and "What does one do with it? "
Perhaps some readers will have answers I can't come up with.
The world's largest gold coin will be auctioned in Vienna, on June 25, 2010, starting at 14 hours.
