The series of "Home Alone" movies had great success. But when it comes to real life, someone has to be charged. A New Jersey woman is now under arrest, after she allegedly left her 12-year old daughter alone for days so she could get married.
A New Jersey mother is under arrest, charged with leaving her 12-year-old daughter alone at home by herself for a week so she could fly to Washington to get married.
The Gothamist reports that 31-year old Sarah Haines left her daughter in their Mount Olive home with three dogs and $10 that was supposed to last her all week. Haines is charged with Second degree child endangerment and is being held on $100,000 bail. Court papers reveal that the daughter was "afraid to shower because she was scared because the front door unlocks itself."
Haines, who is a single parent with full custody of her child, reportedly told her daughter a friend would check in on her while she was gone. But although she left on June 3, promising to return three days later on the 6th, she told authorities her flights were canceled and she couldn't return until the 8th. A concerned neighbor finally called the state Division of Youth and Family Services, who asked the police to conduct a welfare check on the girl. An affidavit reveals that the apartment was messy and "permeated by the odor of animal urine." The daughter has been put into state protective custody.
Sarah's father said he was "shocked by this whole thing," but he has hopes that the incident will end with him being reunited with his estranged daughter and granddaughter.
