By Andrew Moran     Jun 12, 2010 in World
Toronto - Hundreds marched from the Israeli Consulate and rallied in front of the Ontario Legislature in Queen's Park in Toronto urging freedom and democracy for the approximate 72 million people living in Iran.
The 2009 Iranian Presidential election
On June 12, 2009, the Islamic Republic of Iran held its tenth election, which saw Abadgaran incumbent President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad have a fierce Presidential challenge in Independent Reformist Mir-Hossein Mousavi.
The official election results saw Ahmadinejad win two-thirds of the vote, or more than 24.5 million votes, and Mousavi claiming 34 per cent of the vote, or more than 13.3 million votes. However, Iranian officials and citizens, as well as many Western countries, expressed concern over electoral fraud and the authenticity of the results.
Ahmadinejad’s win caused massive demonstrations in Iran and all over the world in front Iranian Embassies, including Sydney, Dubai, London, Berlin and other cities. Mousavi vowed that he wouldn’t surrender “to this charade” and urged his supporters to peacefully protest the decision but violence did break out between security forces and Iranian voters, activists and protest groups.
One year later
On Saturday, people around the globe commemorated the one-year anniversary. In front of the Ontario Legislature in Queen’s Park in downtown Toronto, hundreds of people gathered peacefully, calling for democracy and freedom for the people of Iran.

Many signs that were waved in the air urged the government of Iran to end oppression, free political prisoners and support human rights. Other signs provided information about what is currently occurring in Tehran, such as the 4,000 homosexuals who have been executed since 1979 or the at least 100 human rights activists who have been imprisoned.
The rally also showed the lack of women’s rights in Iran by providing just a small glimpse of the amount of women who have been killed by Iran’s police and revolutionary guards since 2009. Taranch Mousavi was raped and burnt to death, while Maryan Mehr Azic was beaten to death during a dormitory raid.
International movements for human rights in Iran
The Human Rights Council has condemned Iran for committing numerous human rights violations. Human Rights Watch (HRW) called Iran’s withdrawal from seeking a council seat “a victory for human rights and those who seek a strong United Nations human rights body.”
A global initiative called the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran began in 2007, which is to shed light on the importance of human rights through international peace and security.
