The deadlock could have broken in the opening minutes of the game by Mesi but the ball sailed over the bar, it was not long until Argentina took the lead after Heinze found himself in achres of space and headed the ball home. Argentina should have doubled their leadin the first half but failed to do so.
A change by Nigeria after half time injected some pace into the game with former Newcastle United striker Obafemi Martins taking on Samuel in the Argentine defence, the Super Eagles had opportunities to to level up the scoreline, an excellent chance falling to Martins but the striker failed to convert.
The result leaves Argentina second in the group level on points with South Korea but behind on goal difference.
