article imageIn pictures: Toronto erects steel security fence for G20 summit Special

By David Silverberg     Jun 9, 2010 in World
Toronto - With 16 days to go until the G20 summit in Toronto, construction has begun on the three-metre-high fence circling a large section of the downtown core. People with proper identification will be allowed to enter the fenced-off area.
The chain-link fence and concrete barriers will run along Rees St. from Lake Shore Blvd. W. to Bremner Blvd., while also stretching about 20 metres along Lake Shore south of the Steam Whistle Brewery. Barricades are also being constructed to surround the Rogers Centre, where the Toronto Blue Jays play.
Security fences will attempt to keep out unwanted protesters from the main site of the G20 summit, the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.
On June 25 and 26, world leaders including Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and U.S. President Obama will meet to discuss pressing issues affecting the 20 industrialized nations invited to participate in the annual summit.
Toronto city Coun. Adam Vaughan told CTV.ca he's worried for Torontonians living near the security fence. "When you see a fence, literally a lane of traffic away from the front door of somebody's home, my concern is that that person can get in and out of their house when they need to during the month," he said.
Officials say the security fence will start coming down June 28.
