London - The English National Ballet and the Royal Albert Hall have joined forces with arts education charity WebPlay in a cross-cultural dance project called Swanning Around, inspired by Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake.
The project will enable young people from the UK and China to work together on a contemporary re-interpretation of the classic ballet Swan Lake, the English National Ballet has announced. Swanning Around will have its world premiere at the Royal Albert Hall in London on Monday June 14, to coincide with the Royal Albert Hall's in-the-round production of Swan Lake, performed by the English National Ballet.
Swanning Around will also be performed at the UK Pavilion at the Shanghai Expo on September 8, as part of the UK Programme of Events at the Shanghai World Expo.
The Royal Albert Hall and the English National Ballet have harnessed the technology made available by WebPlay for the project. An interactive online resource will enable young people from schools across the UK and China to learn about each other and collaborate virtually with a professional choreographer to create the piece.
Using dance styles from their own cultures and communities, each school will create a dance piece inspired by different characters and scenes from Swan Lake.
Fleur Derbyshire-Fox, English National Ballet Director of Learning, said in a statement, “The project has really reinforced the power of dance in being able to bring people together, transcending language and cultural barriers.”
Each group will perform their dance piece at the Royal Albert Hall to new music by Sally Graves, providing a contemporary take on the music of Tchaikovsky. This will be followed by a grand finale, choreographed by English National Ballet soloist Jenna Lee, which will bring together 130 young dancers.
